UPDATE - this photo has been claimed and sent home to relatives.

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Fred Burr & Emma"

PHOTO TAKEN: Mock Studio, Jamestown OH, circa 1902

PURCHASED: 2022 Shelbyville Antiques Mall, Shelbyville KY

This photo was probably taken around the time the young couple was married, which was 1902. The fashions are appropriate for that time period.

The young man is Fredric "Fred" Earl BURR, born 12 Feb 1880 in Greene County Ohio, to parents:

  •    William Hendrickson Burr (1852-1935, son of John Burr & Henrietta Thompson)

SHAFFER, Louise O. (Columbus OH)

Mrs. Louise Shaffer

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Mrs. Louise Shaffer

PHOTO TAKEN: Baker's Art Gallery, Columbus Ohio, circa 1895

PHOTO ACQUIRED: 2022 Dec, Wildwood Antiques Mall, Wildwood FL

This is LOUISE OLMSTEAD WHEELER, born 27 Dec 1856 in Cheshire Massachusetts to parents James Sheffield Wheeler (1831-1897, son of Nathan Wheeler and Lydia Sheffield) and Ruth Alice Olmstead (1831-1859, daughter of Nathaniel Olmstead and Louisa Battey).

When Louise was about 2 years old, her mother passed away.

The family moved to Chicago and are enumerated on the 1879 Federal Census. I am not certain who "Alice" and "baby Alice" are on this Census, as the 1870 Census did not have a descriptor column for terms such as "wife", "cousin", "sister-in-law", etc.

1870 CENSUS > Illinois > Cook > Chicago

  • WHEELER, James, 38, Lumber man, born in Connecticut
  • WHEELER, Alice, 22, keeping house, born in Ohio
  • WHEELER, Alice, 1, born in Michigan
  • WHEELER, James, 15, office boy, born in Rhode Island
  • WHEELER, Louise, 13, born in Massachusetts
  • DONAHUE, Mary, 20, domestic servant, born in Ireland

Her father remarried at some point to a Scottish woman named Martha Jane Blaney, with whom he had three more daughters; Lollie, Minnie and Edith. He relocated to Utah with his family prior to 1880.

In Sep 1879, Louise married a young roofer named Edwin Forrest Shaffer and remained in Chicago.

By the time of the 1900 Census, this large family is living in Columbus Ohio, where Edwin has built a lucrative business, Shaffer Roofing Co.

1900 CENSUS > Ohio > Franklin > Columbus > 109 W. Fourth Ave

  • SHAFFER, Edwin F., head, Feb 1857, 43, b. IL of NY parents, m. 20yrs, gravel roofing
  • SHAFFER, Louise O., wife, Dec 1856, 43, b. MA of CT & RI parents, m. 20yrs, no occ.
  • SHAFFER, James W., son, Aug 1880, 19, b. IL, gravel roofing

  • WHEELER, Edith, boarder (female), Mar 1878, 22, born in IL of CT & Scottish parents, bookkeeper

Obviously the boarder in 1900 is Louise's half-sister Edith.

In 1923, Louise's husband Edwin died of bronchial asthma.

The 1926 City Directory for Columbus shows Louise (widow of Edwin) as the President of Shaffer Roofing, and her son Wesley as the manager of the firm. Daughter Louise "Gladys" is a fashion designer.

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Dec 2022, sent to me by my aunt who found the photo at a second hand shop in The Dalles OR

This is a photo which has been reprinted onto a postcard. I include a picture of the reverse here. It bears a cancelled 1-penny Ben Franklin stamp and the postmark reads: Spring Valley WIS, Oct 24 7am, 1911. The card is addressed to Miss Agnes Brevig, Starbuck RFD, Minnesota.

FRANZEN, Harold (Columbus NE)

Harold FRANZEN

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Harold Franzen

PHOTO TAKEN: Daniel Studio, Columbus NE, circa 1935

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Dec 2022 South Florida Fairgrounds Antiques Festival

About 8 years ago I attended the Antiques Festival at the fairground in Palm Beach County FL. At that time I bought several photos from the Franzen and Van Heufeln families. Imagine my surprise when I recently attended the same show, found the same vendor, and found the same surname of Franzen.

This is Harold Louis FRANZEN, born 1 Mar 1921 in Leigh NE, to parents Frank FRANZEN  and Addie KORFHAGE. Frank Franzen was a brother to Heie and Ubbo "Otto" Franzen who are mentioned in previous posts. That makes Harold a first cousin to Otto's kids Art & Elaine Franzen (https://oldphotosfound.blogspot.com/2014/03/franzen-art-and-elaine.html) and to Heie's kids Minnie, Elsie and Ester (https://oldphotosfound.blogspot.com/2014/03/franzen-and-van-heufeln-children.html).

He attended USC and married Evelyn Baker in Anaheim. [This news notice at right appeared in "The Leigh World" 06 Dec 1946.]

He worked as assistant superintendent of schools. They lived for many years in Anaheim CA, but returned to Columbus Nebraska around 1985.

He died 3 Dec 1992. His obit mentions a surviving brother La Verne Franzen, but does not mention any children.

POLLOCK, Mary Ann (Worcester MA)

Mary Ann POLLOCK-FLAGG

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Mary Ann Pollock, Worcester Mass

PHOTO TAKEN: unknown studio, circa 1875

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Dec 2022 South Florida Fairgrounds Antiques Festival

Mary Ann POLLOCK, born 1848 in Marlboro, to parents Patrick POLLOCK & Bridget DORSEY (or MADDEN.) Her siblings included Margaret, Edward and Elisa.

1 Jun 1890, at age 41, she married Joel Sidney FLAGG, age 58. It was her first marriage. It was Joel's second marriage, his first wife having passed in 1885. Joel Flagg's parents were Joshua & Almira FLAGG. At the time of her marriage, Mary Ann worked in the capacity of housekeeper for a private family.

Sadly, Mary Ann's husband died in a workplace accident a mere 7 months after they were married.

1900 Census > MA > Worcester > Hubbardston

FLAGG, Mary A., head, 51 wd, Sept 1848, born in Mass to Scottish and Irish parents, no occupation

1910 Census > MA > Worcester > Wocester > State Hospital

FLAGG, Mary A., inmate, 61 wd

This obit was found in the Apr 1, 1927 edition of The Evening Gazette, Worcester MA.

I regret that I am unable to find any further data on Mary Ann. It appears she had no children to keep her memory and mourn her passing. It looks rather doubtful that I will be able to find a descendant to whom I may gift this photograph, but perhaps some tangential relation can be found.

BICHMANN, Hermann (Newburgh NY)

HERMANN BICHMANN (Newburgh NY)

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Hermann Bichmann

PHOTO TAKEN: William C. Peck Studio, Newburgh NY, circa 1890

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Dec 2022 South Florida Fairgrounds Antiques Festival

Back (Click for larger version)

This is Christian Carl Ludwig Wilhelm Hermann BICHMANN, who obviously was known as "Hermann," born Sept 17, 1865 in Ettingshausen Germany to parents Karl Ludwig Friedrich Georg BICHMANN and Katharina Elisabeth SANGMEISTER.

Hermann went through quite a bit of loss in Germany. When he was 3, he lost his 2-years-older brother Karl Wilhelm. Between ages 7 and 9, three younger siblings died (Hermann August, Eleonore, Meline). And in 1879 at age 13, his older sister Karoline died when she was about 15. When Hermann was 15, his father died. And when he was 21 he lost his mother. This left Hermann virtually alone with the exception of a younger sister who married a man named Zimmer around that time.

Around 1888/1889 Hermann arrived in New York and became a naturalized citizen.

1900 Census > New York > Orange > Newburgh > 417 Washington St

  • BAKER, Rosa, head, 35 wd, Jun 1864, born in NY of German parents, Mineral Waters Mfg
  • RAMSPERGER, Wilhelm, father, 73, Jun 1826, born in Germany, no occupation
  • BICHMANN, Hermann, boarder, 34 s, Sep 1865, born in Germany, manager at Mineral Waters Mfg

30-Sep-1902 in Newburgh, Hermann married Rose Viola BAKER, the widow of J. Edward Baker, whom he knew for several years as he boarded at her house. J. Edward Baker had owned a business which manufactured mineral waters, Baker's Bottled Products, a business which he and his father founded about 1885 in Poughkeepsie and expanded into a second location in Newburgh, NY.

[This insert above was found in the publication "The American Bottler" Volume 28, 1908.]

Rosa died in 1935, and two years later Hermann died (15-Apr-1937).

They are buried in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY.

This is Theodore S. Hopkins, born 6 Sep 1862 to parents Alvin (a carpenter) and Eliza Jane Hopkins.

Husband of Sarah Amelia Baldwin (a great-aunt of Edna Adelina Baldwin, see previous post.) When I purchased this photo, I did not know that Theodore Hopkins and the Baldwins were related, but this small newspaper insert provided the clue that linked the families.

1880 Census > NY > Queens > Queens

  • HOPKINS, Theodore, son in law, 56 m, born in NY, bookkeeper in a newspaper office

I later found the obit for Mary Baldwin, providing further proof of Theodore's place in this family.

Theodore Hopkins died 16 June 1931 and buried next to his wife in Greenfield Cemetery.

BALDWIN, Edna and Frederick Jr (Brooklyn NY)

Siblings Edna and Frederick Baldwin Jr.

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: Edna "Adelina" Baldwin / Frederick Smith Baldwin Jr

PHOTO TAKEN: both taken at Holler Studio, Brooklyn NY, respectively 1905 and 1907

PHOTO ACQUIRED: Dec 2022 South Florida Fairgrounds Antiques Festival

Edna and Freddie Jr were the children of Frederick Smith BALDWIN (1880-1948, son of Smith Baldwin and Emma L. Maginnes) and Florence A. FICKEN (1880-1967, daughter of John C Ficken and Adelina [surname not found]).

Florence's father John C Ficken in 1887 died a ghastly death of being literally burned alive in a gas lamp explosion. This happened when Florence and her sisters were very young. Her mother Adelina remarried John McGINN a few years later and the girls are seen in public records sometimes as Ficken and sometimes McGinn.

Edna was born in 1903.  Freddie was born Mar 10, 1906. He became a celebrated pianist and professor at the Indiana University School of Music. The photo at right was found online in a newspaper story about an upcoming piano concert in which he was a headliner. He died at age 89, 31 Mar 1995.

1910 Census > NY > Nassau > Hempstead > 225 Laurel Avenue

  • McGINN, Adelina, head, 50 wd, born in NY of German parents, Nurse for private family

  • BALDWIN, Edna A., dau, 26 s, secretary at Town Hall
  • BALDWIN, Frederick S. Jr, son, 24 s, music teacher
  • BROWN, Howard, nephew, 16 s, no occupation

1948 - the siblings' father Frederick Sr. died of a heart attack on February 4 after returning home from work. There is a good obit and a couple great photos of him at his Find-a-Grave page. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/38867047/frederick-s-baldwin

1950 Census > NY > Nassau > Hempstead > Maryland Avenue

  • BALDWIN, Florence, head, 69 wd
  • BALDWIN, Edna A., daughter, 46 never married
  • BALDWIN, Frederick S., son 43, married, private piano teacher

(Click any image for larger version.)

Frederick Jr reports his marital status as "married" but there is no wife in the household. He may be separated at this time. Ancestry says he married Margaret Melis (1908-2000). They had a daughter Melissa.

1967 - mother Florence died.

I worked up the following descendancy chart, in order to see how many of these name fit together, and which lines I could follow in an attempt to find an existing relative to whom I may send the photos.

Information was source from Newspaper archives and obituaries. Names in CAPs are the photos I acquired at the show.
