TOLLE, Joseph Augustus

JOSEPH AUGUSTUS TOLLE

Identification on photo: Joseph Augustus Tolle
Photo taken: Johnson Studio, Springfield IL, Dec 14, 1906
Purchased: 2017 Wildwood Antique Mall, Wildwood FL

Inscription identifies the child as "A yearling" and was clearly taken on the occasion of the boy's 1st birthday.

Joseph Augustus Tolle was born Dec 14 1905 to parents Harrie Fisk Tolle and Caroline Editha Hills. His siblings included Corning, Robert, Martha and Mary.

His occupation is clergyman. In 1927 he married Elizabeth Pearl Gates (1907-2010) and they had at least five children.

Ancestry.com had among its records this photograph of Joseph A. Tolle in 1960, taken from a passport or travel application. (At left, I do not possess this image and show it here for comparison purposes only).

Joseph died in 1981 in the Tampa FL area.

TAYLOR, Olga, Russell & Helen (Cedarville, Cal)

OLGA TAYLOR
Identification on photo: OLGA TAYLOR
Photo taken: E & N Snelling Studio, Cedarville CA, circa 1905
Purchased: 2016 Springfield OR, Antique Peddlars

These two photographs of OLGA TAYLOR, taken at different points in her life were both acquired at the same Antique Shop in Springfield Oregon.

The first is of a young girl around 9 years old. The inscription on the back of this photo identifies Olga Taylor, but also says "Mrs. J W Taylor, Eagleville Cal, near Mrs. Lowry" and was perhaps destined to be delivered to Mrs. J W Taylor.

She is found in the Census of 1910 with her parents.

1910 CENSUS > California > Modoc > Dewey
TAYLOR, John W., head, 45, born in NY of English parents, farmer
TAYLOR, Lola, wife, 42, born in CA of Missouri parents
TAYLOR, Olga M., daughter, 14, born in CA
TAYLOR, Helen C., daughter, 12, born in CA
TAYLOR, Russell V., son, 4, born in CA

An interesting note is that the next household on the census is the Lowry family.

The other photograph was taken when Olga was around 17 or 18 (best guess).

She married George Eschtruth (1893-1988).

1940 Census > California > Santa Clara > San Jose
ESCHSTRUTH, George, head, 46, born in Oregon, (no occupation given)
ESCHSTRUTH, Olga M., wife, 43, born in CA
ESCHSTRUTH, Paul J., son 6 mo., born in California

City Directories show that from at least 1932 through at least 1972, George and Olga lived in the same house at 243 S. 18th Street San Jose CA.

Califoria Death Index shows:
Olga Maude Eschstruth, born 2 May 1896, died 6 Nov 1981. Father J W Taylor, mother Lola Vaughn.

Her son Paul Taylor Eschstruth (b. abt Oct 1939). In 1957, he was named National merit scholar as a student at San Jose High School.

UPDATE - From the same booth at Antiques Peddlars came these two photos which also bear the surname TAYLOR. These turn out to be Olga's siblings which are listed with her on the 1910 Census in Dewey California.

RUSSELL VAUGHN TAYLOR

Russell was born 10 Oct 1905 in Eagleville CA, to parents JW Taylor and Lola Vaughn.

In 1940 Census for Gerlach, Washoe County, NV, he is listed with wife Dorothy (Brannon or Barron) and a daughter Gwendolyn who was born abt 1933.

Russell died 9 Jan 1983 in Nevada.

HELEN TAYLOR THRASHER

Helen Taylor was born in 1898 (died 2001). She is shown in the image at right. --->

She married John James Thrasher, a native of Arkansas (1909-1956). They had a daughter named Ruth Thrasher.

THOMPSON, Frank, Lizzie & George

THOMPSON FAMILY - Frank, Lizzie & George

UPDATE - this photograph has been claimed by a relative and is going home!

Identification on photo: Frank THOMPSON, son George THOMPSON and 1st wife Lizzie BATEMAN
Photo taken: Nugent Studio, Chillicothe OH, circa 1897
Purchased: 2015 Burlington KY Antiques Fair

Inscription on back: "Frank Thompson (son of Elijah and Emma Morrow Thompson), his son George and first wife Lizzie Bateman, Union township, Ross County, Ohio" then at the bottom it is signed "by Dorothy Proctor Paul, May 21, 1984"

This photo was taken around 1897, as the boy in the image appears to be around 6 or 7 years old, and he was born in 1890. Also, the mother in this image died in 1900, so it could not be any later than that.

Frank Thompson was born in Clarksburg OH, May 27, 1870. He was a farmer in Ross County OH.

His first wife, Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bateman was born 17 Jan 1871, the daughter of William Bateman and Rhoda Morrison. She married Frank Thompson in Ross County OH on Oct 31, 1889, at age 19.

Lizzie died of tuberculosis on 22 Jun 1900 in Charlevoix County Michigan, where the family was living at the time. Her death certificate remarks that she was the mother of 3 children, of whom 2 survived her.

Their first child is George Morrow Thompson, who is pictured with them in the photo. He was born Aug 4 1890 in Union Township, Ross County, OH.  His sister Helen was born in June of 1899, also in Ohio. George married Pearl Hildenbrand on 11 Oct 1911 and had a son Edwin R Thompson in Oct 1914.

George and his family appear on the 1920 Federal Census. George lists his occupation as Laborer at a Tin Shop. George died fairly young at age 32, 24 Feb 1923.

After Lizzie's death in Michigan, father Frank moved his family back to Ohio, and soon re-married to Nancy Fogle (a niece of his older sister's husband.) They had at least 2 sons; Herman and Carvel.

One more thing … the lady who wrote the inscription identified herself as Dorothy Proctor Paul. I have been able to identify her as Dorothy Proctor (1922-2001) a daughter of William Proctor and Clione FOGLE.  Clione was a daughter of Enos Fogle and Frank's older sister Addie THOMPSON.

THOMAS, A. Lywella (Utica NY)

Photo taken: S.R. Lewis Studio, Utica, NY, circa 1900?
Purchased: 2017 August, Madison-Bouckville Antiques Week

This is A. Lywella Thomas, born June 1879, died 1967 in Madison County NY. She is the daughter of Welsh immigrants Elias J. Thomas (b. 1842) and Thirza (maiden name unknown) (b. 1845).

Identification on photo: Josephine (Josie) Augusta Clark, 1 yr 2 mo
Photo taken: Bronson Studio, Waterbury Conn. circa 1915-1920
Purchased: 2018 Aug Madison-Bouckville Antiques Week

I found more than one Josephine Clark living in New Haven County, CT at around the correct time period. But I believe the correct one is this one:

1930 CENSUS > Connecticut > New Haven > Prospect
CLARK, Clifford P., 46, born in CT of MA parents, farmer (son of Halsey Clark)
CLARK, Clarabel (Shepard), 43, born in CT of CT  parents
CLARK, Josephine, 14, born in CT (born 1-Sep-1915)
CLARK, Alfred, 9, born in CT
CLARK, Gertrude, 3, born in CT

Interestingly, Clifford P. Clark is a son of Halsey Steel Clark, whose photo was found at the same sale and has already been researched and sent home to a relative.

1940 CENSUS > Connecticut > New Haven > Prospect
CLARK, Clifford, 56, woodchopper on a farm
CLARK, Claribel, 53
CLARK, Josephine, 24, clerical work at brass mill
CLARK, Alfred, 19, milk salesman at dairy
CLARK, Gertrude, 13

Josephine married Peter A. Collins, and died 14 Sep 2016 Naugatuck CT, buried in Prospect CT. I see no evidence of direct descendants.

Survived at the time by her younger sister Gertrude and her family.

GRACE CAHOON
UPDATE - the above photo (Gladys) was acquired nearly two years ago. Remarkably, I stopped by the same antique mall this weekend (Jan 2020) and the first photograph I found was identified as "Grace Cahoon" who is Gladys' youngest sister, not born yet at the time of the 1920 Census.

Grace Cahoon was purchased and sent today to the grandson of Gladys who received the first photo on this post.

Identification on photo: Mabel Severs and Estle Exline (Daddy's Sister)

I believe Estle is the one in the dark skirt, and Mabel is in the light dress.

Estle Elizabeth Severs was born and died in Moulton Iowa. She is the daughter of Perley Clarence Severs (1875-1953) and Huldah Ann Baldock (1874-1967). Her siblings include:

HETRICK, Eva (Mrs Harvey Swartz) (Quakertown PA)

EVA HETRICK-SWARTZ

UPDATE - Eva Hetrick has been claimed by her granddaughter and will be going home!

Identification on photo: Eva Hetrick, Mrs. Harvey Swartz
Photo taken: Weidner Studio, Quakertown PA, circa 1907
Purchased: 2019 Brandywine River Antique Mall, Chadds Ford PA

My research finds that Eva Stull Hetrick was born 11 Jun 1889 in Trumbauersville, which is a southwest suburb of Quakertown. She appears to have lived her entire life in and around Quakertown.

She appears to be around age 17 in this photo, and it may have been a school photo for her graduating class' submissions for their yearbook.

Eva's father was a widower, Jacob Hetrick. Her mother was Leonora Stull, who died in 1908.

Her spouse was Harvey Daniel Swartz, and they had children Raymond Jacob, Harvey Jr., and Robert Charles.

1910 Census for Trumbauersville finds Eva and Harvey, and their 15 mo old son Raymond living with Eva's father Jacob Hetrick, and Eva's maternal grandmother Judie Stull. Jacob, Eva and Harvey are all employed at a cigar factory.

NOTE - this photo is a bit stained with unknown source. I have tried to gently clean it with cotton swab, but it made no difference.

HAHNE, ENDERS and DONLEY

These three photos were found together in the same box at a booth in the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds December antique show.  They are each labeled in what appears to be the same pen with light blue ink, and the same penmanship. I believe they are related in some way; either sisters, cousins or friends of the same person.

SOPHIE HAHNE-ENDERS

Identification on photo: SOPHIE ENDERS
Photo taken: French Studio, Ravenna Ohio, circa 1884-1900
Purchased: Dec 2017 at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

Sophie was born 1858 in Pennsylvania, and appears as a 12yo on the 1870 Census for Ravenna OH, living with her father August (a glassworker)(1818-1892) and mother Katharine Spaniol-Hahne (1823-1911).

(Click for larger image)
Her father August William Henry HAHNE died 1892, at age 74.

Sophie and her siblings are:
Helena
August Jr
Emma
William
Louisa
Sophia
Henry
Clara
Caroline

KATE HAHNE

Identification on photo: KATE HAHNE
Photo taken: W.B. Cuyler, Greenfield Indiana, circa 1893-95
Purchased: Dec 2017 at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

Because leg-o-mutton sleeves were fashionable from about 1893-95, and as Kate appears to be around 20 years old in the photo, we can put Kate's birth year at around 1873.

I believe this is Katheryne CAREY-HAHNE (1873-1935), wife of Sophie's younger brother Henry HAHNE. They lived in Indiana.

ADDIE DONLEY

Identification on photo: ADDIE DONLEY
Photo taken: no marks, circa 1884-1900
Purchased: Dec 2017 at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

Charles DONLEY & Addie E. CROOP applied for Marriage License in Ravenna Ohio, according to Ravenna Ohio Democratic Press, January 15, 1890. Married 9 Jan 1890.

On the 1900 Census, Charles and Addie live in Shalersville, Portage County, OH, farming. They live with son Roy (or Ray) E. Donley, age 7, and Addie's father Elias Croop, 80, who was born in Pennsylvania, of German immigrant parents.

On the 1910 Census, at Shalersville, OH, Charles and Addie Donley (age 46) are farming. They live with son Ray (17) and daughter Gracie (6), also Addie's father Elias Croop (90) and a niece Ester Howard (15).

On the 1930 Census, Ravenna, OH, Charles and Addie Donley appear. 66 and 67 respectively. Charles works on a chicken farm.

I believe Addie must be a friend and neighbor of the Hahne family which lived in Ravenna, Portage county, Ohio. Alas, if only there were an 1890 census! It might be possible to prove they were neighbors.

LESCARBEAU, Shirley & family (Massachussetts)

UPDATE - these photos have been claimed and are going home to Shirley's niece!

Identification on photo: Shirley Lescarbeau
Photo taken: snapshot prob. mid-1940s
Purchased: January 2019 South Florida Fairgrounds Antique Show

This snapshot and the one below were acquired at the Palm Beach County Antiques Fair which is held monthly at the South Florida Fairgrounds.

I generally do not acquire snapshots since they almost never have identifying information written on them. This pair have apparently been lifted out of a black-paper photo album (some black bits still attached to the back) but remarkably both had hand-written identification on the back.

Click for larger image
The second photograph was taken much earlier, probably around 1927, (location unknown), and includes the following info: Grandfather Rainford, Uncle Willie Mason (middle), Pap Lescarbeau, Les, Shirley, John & Margaret Lescarbeau.

Before I'd delved into too much research, I found Shirley's obituary in a 1997 Massachusetts newspaper. It tells exactly who she was, better than I can do, so I include it here with younger survivors edited out.

At this point, I knew exactly who to contact, which was either the niece or nephew mentioned in the obit. I found the niece with very little effort and contacted her. She was eager to receive the photos, so they were sent home the next day.

She contacted me a few days later and included this photograph of her mother Rita (not born yet at the time of the sibling photo) viewing the images of her siblings, father, grandfather and uncle.

JUDD, Jehiel J.

JEHIEL JOEL JUDD

Identification on photo: "My Grandfather, Jehiel J. Judd"
Photo taken: Rabineau Studio, Albany NY, circa 1880-1885
Purchased: Dec 2018 at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

This photo has already been sent home to the subject's great-great grandson.

I had not even had time to research Jehiel Judd when I received an email from a man who said he had seen Jehiel's name on my Index page (link here) which includes all of the 750 or so photos I have in my collection, the majority of which have not been researched yet.

But I did want to do a brief search for information on the man, just to make sure this was the same Jehiel Judd that the person hoped he was. Based on the fashions being worn for this photo, especially the small lapels on the jacket, it appears to have been taken between 1880 and 1885.  The gentleman in the image appears to be late 70s or early 80s. That means he was born around 1800 (give or take a few years).

Initial searches at Ancestry and Find-a-Grave show that there are a few men who have been named Jehiel Judd. This particular one is Jehiel Joel Judd, born 9 Oct 1799 in Greene County, New York, and died 21 Feb 1888 (Nebraska) and buried at New Hope Cemetery, Monroe, Platte County, NE.

His son, Jehiel James Judd (1838-1914) was a Lieutenant in the Civil War and lived in the Catskill area southwest of Albany NY.  It is easy enough to presume that the elder Jehiel had this photograph made in Albany during a family visit.

The man who contacted me verified that Jehiel James Judd is his great-grandfather and had assumed this was the man on the photo list. As it turns out the man on my list was his great-great-grandfather and he was shocked to have found an image of him. No one in his family had seen an image of either ancestor.

I have also sent him the image of the younger Judd, which I do not possess, but was sourced from Find-a-Grave.

It's great when someone reaches out to me as a relative of one of my photo subjects! It happens once in a while and certainly saves me a lot of work!

BAUSCHER, Alfred Noll

ALFRED NOLL BAUSCHER

Identification on Photo: Alfred Bauscher, Franklin Street, Fleetwood, PA
Photo Taken: New York Gallery Photo Studio, Reading PA, circa 1900
Purchased: September 2019, Brandywine River Antiques Market, Chadds Ford, PA

Born Dec 9 1870 to parents Isaac Bauscher and Sarah Noll, Alfred was a carpenter in the small town of Fleetwood, which is situated about 10 miles northeast of Reading. He later worked for Fleetwood Metal Body Company, an automotive coachbuilder purchased by Fisher Body and later integrated into General Motors.

He had an older brother John Bauscher (1868-1930) and a younger sister Katie Bauscher-Ganey (1879-1960).

Alfred was married to the widow Clara Berg (nee Mertz, dau. of Isaac & Florinda Mertz) in October 1893. This was a second marriage for both, as Clara's husband had died in 1982.

Alfred was previously married in 1889 to Isabella Deisher (1871-1893, daughter of Daniel Deisher of Kutztown, PA).

Alfred lived to be exactly 50 years old, dying on his birthday in 1920, from a fall from scaffolding a few weeks earlier. I find no evidence that he ever had any offspring. I may be able to find existing relatives through his siblings.

Alfred is buried at the Fleetwood Cemetery in Berks County PA.

Click for larger
His brother John Noll Bauscher was the railroad station agent in Fleetwood. He was married to Adeline Merkel. John died in 1930, and his obit states he has grandchildren. John and Adeline had the following children:

Stella M. (1890-1901) died of illness

Walter Merkel Bauscher (1898-1976, Fleetwood postmaster) in 1920 m. Arlean R. Koller (1896-1983)
   -- Louisa M. Bauscher-Stein (1924-2015) m. Steward Stein

Marie M. Bauscher-Adams (1902-1966) m. Webster Dunkle Adams (1904-1963, a baker)

JACKSON, Virginia

VIRGINIA JACKSON

UPDATE - this photo of Virginia Jackson has been claimed by a relative and  is going home.

Identification on photo: Virginia Jackson, Nov 1955, 17 years
Photo taken: unknown photo studio, Louisville KY, Nov 1944
Purchased: Aug 2019 Peddlars Mall, Lexington KY

We can surmise a birth year of 1927, give or take a year.

After some initial research, I find that Virginia was born 12 March, 1927 in Eltowah TN, one of three daughters born to Cooper P. Jackson (1886-1980) and Nina Mae Caldwell-Jackson (1887-1979, a daughter of Dennis Hasking Caldwell and Nancy Catherine Headrick).

1940 Federal Census > KY > Jefferson Co.> Louisville > 517 Iowa Ave.
JACKSON, Cooper P. head, 42, born Georgia, car repair in railroad shop
JACKSON, Nina Mae, wife, 41, born in Tennessee
JACKSON, Virginia E., daughter, 13, born in Tennessee
(5 years previously, the family lived in rural McMahan Co. TENN)

In 1952, Virginia married Marvin Kummer in Louisville. Here is the insert from the Courier-Journal, 22 June, 1952.

This obituary for (mother) Nina Mae (Caldwell) Jackson was located in the Louisville Courier-Journal, 11 Oct 1979. It mentions relatives including daughters "Mrs Freddia Williamson and Mrs. Virginia Kummer."  I am now reminded that some of the photos I saw in the same box at the antique mall bore the name Freddia, which was unusual enough for me to recall it now, but lacked a surname which is why I did not purchase those at the time.

I also find an obituary for Virginia herself, who passed 23 Feb 2018 in Louisville. Her parents and husband preceded her in death. At that time, her sister Freddie was listed as living. Also mentioned is that Virginia was a graduate of Louisville Girls High School and the University of Louisville. She was employed by Louisville Jefferson County schools and taught English and Humanities for 31 years at Southern High School. She and Marvin enjoyed many vacations together to Switzerland and with Marvin's Navy Reunion groups.

There is no mention of children in the obit. So this photo may end up being difficult to re-home, but will keep researching.

BODENHAMER, Noah James

NOAH JAMES BODENHAMER

UPDATE - Noah James Bodenhamer has been claimed by a family member and is going home!

Identification on photo: "My Buber" Mr. Jimmie Bodenhamer. This is Noah James.
Photo taken: unknown photographer, circa 1920-25 ?
Purchased: Aug 2019, Peddlar Mall, Lexington KY

This snapshot appears to have been taken in the mid-1920s, but that is just a guess.

Noah James Bodenhamer was born in Pittboro Indiana 4 Feb 1902, to parents John Bodenahmer (1872-1959 son of Noah Festus Bodenhamer and Rebecca Long) and Mary Shockley (1879-1963, daughter of William T Shockley and Senera Sharp).

By 1920 the family had relocated to San Antonio Texas.

1920 Federal Census > Texas > Bexar > San Antonio > 542 Cincinnati Avenue
BODENHAMER, John, head, 46, born in IN of NC & IN parents, building contractor
BODENHAMER, Mary, wife, 40, born in IN of SC & KY parents
BODENHAMER, Herman, son, 21, born in IN, salesman at Dept Store
BODENHAMER, Noah, son, 17, born in IN
BODENHAMER, Helen, daughter, 12, born in IN
BODENHAMER, Ethel, daughter, 11, born in IN

There was an elder brother who was already out of the house by 1920 and was in fact at medical school in 1920. His name was William BODENHAMER. In 1916, just when he was planning to enter medical school at Michigan Univ, his mother Mary became quite ill and many doctors could not help her. It was eventually a doctor of osteopathy who helped her back to health. So impressed was William that he entered the American School of Osteopathy in Missouri (now named the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine).

Noah James followed in William's professional footsteps and also went to the same school.

BODENHAMER, N James, head, 28, single, doctor, osteopath
there are also several boarders at the the same house, but James is shown as owner.

Dr. N James Bodenhamer died 18 Jan 1991, at age 88, and is buried at Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana.

I cannot find any evidence that Noah James ever married or had children who might wish to have this photograph.

This obituary was located in the Indianapolis News, 22 Jan 1991.

MARSHALL, Edna Earle

EDNA EARLE MARSHALL

Identification on photo: EDNA EARLE MARSHALL
Photo taken: unknown photographer, circa 1950
Purchased: Aug 2019 at the Peddlars Mall in Lexington KY

Based on the hairstyle and fashions, I am placing this photo into a time period of circa 1950. I have a photo of my own mother which greatly resembles this and it was taken in that time period. Edna looks to be about 16 years old, so this would put the birth year at or near 1934-36.

This photograph is quite small - about 1.5" x 2" and has suffered some creasing, and loving wear. There appears to be something written on the front, near the lower edge of the collar, but I cannot make it out. The back bears the printed name Edna Earle Marshall and the cursive name (in reddish or brown ink) Edna Marshall.

On FindaGrave.com, I find an Edna Earle Thompson (1934-1989) who was married to Paul Anderson Marshall, and buried in Bethany United Methodist Church Cemetery, New Bethel Township, North Carolina.

When I search for that person on Ancestry.com, she immediately comes up in a  family tree with a photo (taken several years later) which confirms this is the same person.  Edna is the daughter of Henry W. Thompson and Bessie Mae Simpson. She was married at the age of 18 to Paul A. Marshall, and worked in Greensboro as an office secretary for a company called Standard Theater Supply.

Edna died in 1989, leaving a son and three daughters. By means of the obituary in the local newspaper, I was able to see the surviving family members' names, and began searching immediately on Google, Facebook and other sources to see if I could find a direct descendant, to whom I could return this photograph.

Fortunately, I found a lovely story online about how the family continues to honor Edna's memory with a quilt square Edna stitched herself. The square is on display at the family's vineyards near Bethany and Reidsville, NC, and is part of the Rockingham County Quilt Trail.

I will contact Edna's family immediately.

HARRIS Family of Oklahoma 1930s

"HARRIS Family of Oklahoma"

These two photos of the HARRIS family are in the care of Jerry Huffman of California, and were found in his father's possessions after he passed away. I am posting them here in an effort to help him find the family they belong to.  The photos are enclosed in a single paper folder, with no photographer's marks or location found. In ink, the words "Harris Family of Okla" are inscribed on the folder, with the name "Buford" added faintly above in pencil.

Jerry's father Buford "Huff" Huffman (see photo below) left home around age 15 (circa 1930-1931), and met this family in the early 1930's when he went to find work in the oil industry in Texas and Oklahoma. He must have known the family fairly well to have been gifted this photo of them.

The fashions and hairstyles support the 1930 timeframe.

But the question remains - who are these Harris people?

Buford Huffman
BUFORD MILTON HUFFMAN has a wonderfully detailed memorial, created by his son, at Findagrave which shows much useful information.

The paper-trail shows that Buford had returned to New Mexico and was residing in Santa Rosa by 1935.

1935 - Santa Rosa NM (per 1940 Census)

1940 - Santa Rosa NM Federal Census.

1943 - Santa Rosa NM for WWII draft registration. Discharged Jan 1946.

1959 - appears in San Diego city directory.

Does anyone out there recognize the people in the two upper photos?  I welcome your help.
