This is Frederick A. Ballard, born 1849 in Charing, Kent, England and immigrated to America a year or two later with his parents (John Ballard & Mary Ann Ottaway) and siblings on the ship Oxenbridge, arriving 26 Nov 1851.

The adopted daughter Elizabeth Cornell Tillson, also described as step-daughter in 1900, was born 30 Sep 1888 to parents Hiram Asa Tillson (1852-1891) and Carrie Hoag Cornell (1848-1888). When mother Carrie died in 1888, Hiram married second wife Hattie Ellis. And when Hiram died in 1891, Hattie married second husband Frederick Ballard.

Elizabeth Tillson married Jay Dart Sholes (1889-1975) and had a daughter Caroline Sholes-Gates, and sons Frederick Irving Sholes, Stuart F. Sholes, and Warren C. Sholes.
