DIEFFENBACH. Kittie (Sullivan County, PA)

KITTIE DIEFFENBACH

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Kittie Diffenbach 1 year"
PHOTO TAKEN: unknown location and photographer, circa 1905-1906
PURCHASED: 2017 Aug Madison-Bouckville (NY) Antiques Week

The handwriting on the back appears to say "Diffenback" or "Diffenbach" but I believe the correct spelling is DIEFFENBACH considering the area in which these people lived. The surname in Lancaster County PA is generally spelled DIFFENBACH, but those from Sullivan County PA use DIEFFENBACH. The headstone above is from Findagrave.com and shows the unusual first name of father Sylvellin Dieffenbach

I acquired this photo with another marked "Diffenbach" which bears a photographer's stamp giving a location of Dushore Pennsylvania, which is in Sullivan county, and gives a starting location for the research.

"Kittie" is often a nickname for Kate, Catherine, Kathleen, etc.

I immediately found a Catherine Dieffenbach (born abt 1906 to parents Sylvellin A. Dieffenbach and Eldora Margaret Brown) on the 1910 Federal Census for Sullivan County Pennsylvania, in a township called Cherry (abt 6 miles south of Dushore):

1910 Federal Census > PA > Sullivan > Cherry
DIEFFENBACH, Sylvellin A., head, 46, married for 24 yrs, born in PA of PA parents, coal miner
DIEFFENBACH, Dora M., wife, 44, married 24 years, 5 of 6 children living, born in PA of PA parents
DIEFFENBACH, Lewis M., son, 23, born in PA, works at coal mine
DIEFFENBACH, Daniel H., son, 18, born in PA, works at coal mine
DIEFFENBACH, Ellie L., dau, 16, born in PA
DIEFFENBACH, Catherine D., dau, 4, born in PA

The missing children from this Census are Winnie Mae Dieffenbach-Sailor, who was born in 1889 (making her abt 21 at the time, and likely already married and out of this household). The other is Madeline Laura Dieffenbach (1898-1899) which accounts for the "6 children, 5 living" note on Dora's line in the 1910 Census.

Kathryn D. Dieffenbach-Bergan-Vogel (born 14 Aug 1905, Sullivan County PA - died 25 May 1972 in Rochester NY) buried in Irondequoit Cemetery, Monroe County NY. She was married twice, 1) Cyril Joseph Bergan (died 1942), 2) Ellery G. Vogel.  Per her 1972 obit, her survivors included her brother Daniel of Sayre PA, and her children:
 - Donald Bergan
 - Robert Bergan
 - Gloria Bergan Crocetti (1929-1978) m. Tee Crocetti
 - Judy Bergan Plunkett, wife of David Plunkett
 - Ellen Bergan, wife of 1) Paul Bonnet (California), 2) Mooney
