Mary Ann POLLOCK, born 1848 in Marlboro, to parents Patrick POLLOCK & Bridget DORSEY (or MADDEN.) Her siblings included Margaret, Edward and Elisa.

1 Jun 1890, at age 41, she married Joel Sidney FLAGG, age 58. It was her first marriage. It was Joel's second marriage, his first wife having passed in 1885. Joel Flagg's parents were Joshua & Almira FLAGG. At the time of her marriage, Mary Ann worked in the capacity of housekeeper for a private family.

Sadly, Mary Ann's husband died in a workplace accident a mere 7 months after they were married.

This obit was found in the Apr 1, 1927 edition of The Evening Gazette, Worcester MA.

I regret that I am unable to find any further data on Mary Ann. It appears she had no children to keep her memory and mourn her passing. It looks rather doubtful that I will be able to find a descendant to whom I may gift this photograph, but perhaps some tangential relation can be found.

This is Christian Carl Ludwig Wilhelm Hermann BICHMANN, who obviously was known as "Hermann," born Sept 17, 1865 in Ettingshausen Germany to parents Karl Ludwig Friedrich Georg BICHMANN and Katharina Elisabeth SANGMEISTER.

Hermann went through quite a bit of loss in Germany. When he was 3, he lost his 2-years-older brother Karl Wilhelm. Between ages 7 and 9, three younger siblings died (Hermann August, Eleonore, Meline). And in 1879 at age 13, his older sister Karoline died when she was about 15. When Hermann was 15, his father died. And when he was 21 he lost his mother. This left Hermann virtually alone with the exception of a younger sister who married a man named Zimmer around that time.

Around 1888/1889 Hermann arrived in New York and became a naturalized citizen.

30-Sep-1902 in Newburgh, Hermann married Rose Viola BAKER, the widow of J. Edward Baker, whom he knew for several years as he boarded at her house. J. Edward Baker had owned a business which manufactured mineral waters, Baker's Bottled Products, a business which he and his father founded about 1885 in Poughkeepsie and expanded into a second location in Newburgh, NY.

Rosa died in 1935, and two years later Hermann died (15-Apr-1937). 

They are buried in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County, NY.

This is Theodore S. Hopkins, born 6 Sep 1862 to parents Alvin (a carpenter) and Eliza Jane Hopkins.

Husband of Sarah Amelia Baldwin (a great-aunt of Edna Adelina Baldwin, see previous post.) When I purchased this photo, I did not know that Theodore Hopkins and the Baldwins were related, but this small newspaper insert provided the clue that linked the families.

I later found the obit for Mary Baldwin, providing further proof of Theodore's place in this family.

Theodore Hopkins died 16 June 1931 and buried next to his wife in Greenfield Cemetery.

Edna and Freddie Jr were the children of Frederick Smith BALDWIN (1880-1948, son of Smith Baldwin and Emma L. Maginnes) and Florence A. FICKEN (1880-1967, daughter of John C Ficken and Adelina [surname not found]). 

Florence's father John C Ficken in 1887 died a ghastly death of being literally burned alive in a gas lamp explosion. This happened when Florence and her sisters were very young. Her mother Adelina remarried John McGINN a few years later and the girls are seen in public records sometimes as Ficken and sometimes McGinn.

Edna was born in 1903.  Freddie was born Mar 10, 1906. He became a celebrated pianist and professor at the Indiana University School of Music. The photo at right was found online in a newspaper story about an upcoming piano concert in which he was a headliner. He died at age 89, 31 Mar 1995.

Frederick Jr reports his marital status as "married" but there is no wife in the household. He may be separated at this time. Ancestry says he married Margaret Melis (1908-2000). They had a daughter Melissa.

I worked up the following descendancy chart, in order to see how many of these name fit together, and which lines I could follow in an attempt to find an existing relative to whom I may send the photos.

This is Clarence August HAHN, born 21 March 1890 in Muscatine Iowa, to parents John W. HAHN and Bertha WAGNER. Father John's parents are Johannes "John" Hahn & Christina Vaupel, both born in Germany. His second wife was Clairette Rose Williams Sherman, whom he married in May 1929 after the death of his Clarence's mother Bertha in 1927.

Clarence Hahn, freshman
at Millikin College

In June 1914 Clarence married Bertha Margaret Danzeisen, a girl he met at Millikin College in Decatur Illinois. (I do not possess the photo at left - it was found online in a digital copy of the 1908 yearbook for Millikin College.) However the bride died unexpectedly in December of the same year of "acute septicaemia and heart complications."

In June 1919 he married Katherine Hazel Blair (1888-1967), daughter of Lincoln Clay Blair and Katherine G. Donlon.

Photo above of Robert WELCH was acquired at the same time as that of his daughter Mary. On the back is written: "Robert Welch, father of Mary, Clara, Artie, Nellie. Great-grandfather of Dorothy."

Mary C. WELCH (9 Oct 1865 - 17 Jun 1944) is a daughter of Robert WELCH (1842-1920) and Mary Emma BRANDT (1844-1920).  

Mary had several siblings:

• Clara Welch (b.1872) m. Gardner Wallace
• Nellie A. Welch (b.1874)
• Robert J. Welch (b.1877)
• William Welch (1879-1919)
• Arthur H. Welch (1883-1943)

25 Nov 1886, Mary became the wife of Charles F. HAHN (9 Oct 1865 - 3 Apr 1953), hardware salesman, and son of Johannes "John" Hahn & Christina Vaupel, both born in Germany. This means Charles F. HAHN is a brother of John Hahn (the father of Clarence August Hahn, see above.)

Robert HAHN

Mary and Charles had children:

• Florence H. HAHN (1890-1986).
• Robert HAHN (1894-1981) m. Mollie Mae Christiansen, moved to Miami FL

Robert had a daughter (Dorothy 1926-1999) married Richard Lund (Richard died 1997).

Dorothy HAHN-LUND passed away a couple decades ago in Florida. I believe these photographs may have belonged to her.

This photo of Dorothy was found in an archived edition of "Florida Today" 12 October 1993. It is remarkable how much she resembles her grandmother Mary Welch-Hahn.

In order to help me visualize the relationship between the people in these physical photos, I have worked up a crude family tree and marked in yellow the people in the photos I recently acquired.

UPDATE - It is three months later, and having returned to the same Antiques Fair and sought out the same vendor, I was able to locate and purchase a dozen more individual photographs from this same family.

They are being returned to the same descendant of Mary Welch as the photos in the earlier post.

UPDATE - Gertie Luker has been claimed by her great-granddaughter and is going home!

With this much information supplied on the back, it was fairly easy to confirmed the identity of this woman.

This is Gertrude Donohue-Luker, born in about 1874 to parents Thomas Donohue (1830-1905) & Bridget McEvoy (1838-1912). 

The 1875 State Census finds her and her family living in Herkimer NY.

• 1901-1981 Marjorie Mary Luker-LATUS (m. John Harry LATUS)

1900 Census shows Fred Luker as the operator of a book store in Utica. The couple have two children at that time, but Gertie reports she has had 3 children, 2 living.

1908 City Directory of Utica NY states she is the widow of Fred W. Luker, who died in late January of that year.

This is Lena Maud Garrison, born in Frontenac, Ontario on 23 Nov 1888 to parents David Reuben Garrison (1863-1937) and Charlotte Bradford (1863-1949).

In 1908 she married Merrian Francis Lakins (1882-1966, son of Emon Lakins and Caroline Hill). 

Their children:

• 1911-1963 - Charles Emon Lakins (m. Gladys Rendell)  son: Douglas Lakins

Harter, Anna (Oklahoma City, OK)

There was quite a lot of useful information on the reverse.

Because there was no location on the photograph, it was not possible to find the correct Anna Harter among over a hundred possible suspects. So I had to start at the other end of the data and figure out who Marion Stafford was.

The photo was located in Springfield Oregon, and I also discovered that Springfield once had a resident named Marion Stafford who had died about a dozen years ago. His parents were James Benjamin Stafford and Ada Blanche Eells. That most unusual surname of Eells assured me that I was on the right track.

Ada Eells-Stafford was the daughter of Oliver Howard Eells and Mae Dority (seen variously in records as Dorety, Dorrity, Daugherty).

And sure enough, Mae Dority-Eells had a sister name Anna Dority who married a Charles Harter, thus making her the elusive Anna Harter I was seeking. She lived most of her adult like in Oklahoma City, OK.

The "cherry on top" came as I was perusing various Ancestry family trees and found a much earlier photograph of Anna, circa 1895, which when compared side-by-side with the image I had found of Anna Harter, proved that these were the same person.

This is Sally Wolfgang, born around New Year's Day 1942 in Altoona PA, to parents James Stanley Wolfgang (1911-1989) and Marjorie Leah Woods (1911-1989). This notice appears in the Altoona Tribune, 03 Jan, 1942.

The family appears on the 1950 Federal Census for Altoona PA.

WHEATON, Zula Walters (Charlotte MI)

This is Zula Walters-Wheaton, born 23 June 1892 in Chester Indiana to parents Jesse Armory Walters (1870-1959) and Clara C. Bowers (1870-1953). She had four other siblings, all born in Indiana:

•   Lola Hazel Walters (1890-1971) m. Byron Orton Taylor
•   Chancey Walters (1895-1986) m. Edna Marie Wygent
•   Guy C. Walters (1901-1990) m. Jane Wilson
•   Mary Augusta Walters (1902-2006) m. William Neil Letson

Her parents moved two hundred miles away to Charlotte Michigan (between Lansing and Battle Creek) around 1909/1910, but Zula remained in Chester, renting an apartment with two other girls, in order to complete high school in that location. She graduated High School in spring of 1910 and pursued a teaching certificate in Michigan. She passed the exam and by September of that same year had landed a teaching position in a one-room schoolhouse near her parents' home.

This story on the "Strange Schoolhouse" appeared in the Lansing State Journal, 13 May 1979.

In March of 1916, Zula married Earl A. Wheaton (1894-1948), a son of Alonzo Wheaton and Mary J. "Ibbie" Hammil.

After Earl died in 1948, Zula returned to teaching and secured a master's degree in education.

In 1951, Zula's parents celebrated their 62nd anniversary, which was covered in the Lansing State Journal 07 Dec 1951.

Zula's mother Clara died a couple of years later - her obit is from Battle Creek Enquirer, 21 Feb 1953.

Her father Jesse died in 1959.
