HARRIS Family of Oklahoma 1930s

"HARRIS Family of Oklahoma"

These two photos of the HARRIS family are in the care of Jerry Huffman of California, and were found in his father's possessions after he passed away. I am posting them here in an effort to help him find the family they belong to.  The photos are enclosed in a single paper folder, with no photographer's marks or location found. In ink, the words "Harris Family of Okla" are inscribed on the folder, with the name "Buford" added faintly above in pencil.

Jerry's father Buford "Huff" Huffman (see photo below) left home around age 15 (circa 1930-1931), and met this family in the early 1930's when he went to find work in the oil industry in Texas and Oklahoma. He must have known the family fairly well to have been gifted this photo of them.

The fashions and hairstyles support the 1930 timeframe.

But the question remains - who are these Harris people?

Buford Huffman
BUFORD MILTON HUFFMAN has a wonderfully detailed memorial, created by his son, at Findagrave which shows much useful information.
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/11330067/buford-milton-huffman

The paper-trail shows that Buford had returned to New Mexico and was residing in Santa Rosa by 1935.

1935 - Santa Rosa NM (per 1940 Census)

1940 - Santa Rosa NM Federal Census.

1943 - Santa Rosa NM for WWII draft registration. Discharged Jan 1946.

1959 - appears in San Diego city directory.

Does anyone out there recognize the people in the two upper photos?  I welcome your help.

SHAW, Albert Franklin

ALBERT FRANKLIN SHAW
Elsie, MI

UPDATE - this photograph of Albert Franklin Shaw has been claimed by a relative and is going home!

Acquired at the 2019 January Antique Show at Palm Beach County Fairgrounds.

The photo appears to have been taken between 1900-1910. The studio stamp says "S. Wight, Elsie MICH".

Ancestry.com immediately finds the person who matches the clues provided.

Albert Franklin SHAW, born 7 Aug 1907 in Ashley Michigan (a town about 10 miles away from Elsie, MI). His WWII Draft Card states his employer is the "Grand Trunk Railroad". His wife is Mildred Henrietta Shaw (nee Jones).

I was able to locate a photograph of a more mature Albert Shaw on Ancestry. I do not possess this photo of Albert and his wife Mildred, but I show it here for comparison. (On the left.)

Albert's parents are William Shaw (1883-1962, son of Albert Hugh Shaw & Euphema Clark) and Carrie Elizabeth Ackels (1890-1985, dau. of Franklin D. Ackels & Emma Jean Stevens).

Albert died 8 May 1973.

LYON, Edwin C. & ANTHONY, Carrie V.

EDWIN LYON and Carrie Victoria ANTHONY
(click for larger version)

UPDATE - This photo of Edwin and his wife has been claimed by a relative and is going home!

Identification on photo: "Eddie Lyon & wife"

Photo taken: Leavenworth Studio, Boyne City Michigan, circa 1907

Purchased: Jan 2019 Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

The photograph shown at left was found online in an Ancestry.com family tree and I DO NOT have that one in my possession. But I show it here for comparison. This photo is said to be identified as the wedding of Edwin C. Lyon and Carrie Victoria Anthony. Also in the photo is Carrie's sister Cora Anthony and her future husband. The priest at right has his eyes closed due to the camera flash. The image is rather blurry, but one can see that the wedding couple's clothing is very similar. Carrie may have her sleeves rolled up (or removed) in the seated version.

Edwin Clarke Lyon (b. 27 Sep 1877) is a son of Hervy Lyon (1836-1927) and Louisa J. Handshy/Handsley? (1846-1895).  In 1907, he married a school teacher Carrie V. Anthony (1884-1934) whose parents are not known but reported by Carrie on the 1920 Census as being born in NY.

Edwin registered for the WWI Draft, stating his occupation was "pipe-fitter for Boyne City Chemical Company."  At some point Edwin and Carrie moved to Memphis Tennessee where he continues to work in the Chemical industry.

(Violet and Lillie also had a brother Joseph (1892-1957) who should be on the 1900 Census, but isn't. I cannot imagine why not.)

Violet married Jonathan Minnick (a box maker at a glass company) on 5 May 1906. She had twins in 1910.

Sadly, Lillie would not live to see the 1920 Census, as she died 19 Oct 1918, at age 30 of pneumonia.

As far as I can ascertain, this is the list of Lillie's children:
  • Linda May Hartman (1 May 1907 - 1975) m. Mark Boettner

KRISCHKE, Alice Jane

ALICE JANE KRISCHKE

Identification on photo: Allice Krischke

Photo taken: J.A. Edmiston, photographer, Canton Illinois, circa 1880-84

Purchased: 2019 Jan at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

It was only with the aid of people on various FaceBook genealogy groups, that we were able to decipher the handwriting that identified the subject of this photo. In the end, we all agreed on "Allice Krischke", especially after noting that the capital K is not connected, and neither is the smaller k toward the end of the surname.

The tight finger-curls framing the face were popular in the late 1870s and then again in the 1920s. The dress is current to about 1880-1884.

There was a large Krischke family living in Canton Illinois and they appear on the 1880 Census.

1880 Census > Illinois > Fulton > Canton
KRISCHKE, Joseph, 51, butcher, born in Austria of Austrian parents
KRISCHKE, Mary, 43, wife, born in KY of KY parents
KRISCHKE, Byron, 20, son, butcher, born in IL

KRISCHKE, Estella, 7, daughter, at home, born in IL
KRISCHKE, Eddie, 5, son, at home, born in IL
KRISCHKE, Maud, 3, daughter, at home, born in IL

At age 28, on 29 May 1889, Alice married 29 year old Edgar Bredwell, a salesman in Canton, a son of Sylvester Bredwell and Martha Heins. The marriage records indicate that Alice is a daughter of Joseph Krischke and Mary C. (Johnson).

BREDWELL, Eleanor, daughter, 4, Nov 1895, born in IL
BREDWELL, Lela, daughter, 18, Aug 1881, born in IL

(Lela is Edward's daughter from a first wife Mary Brokaw who died in 1885.)

BREDWELL, Joseph Y., son, 16, born in IL, baker in a bakery
BREDWELL, Elinor, daughter, 14, born in IL

Edgar Bredwell apparently died around 1918. There is a Civil War pension that Alice applied for Aug 3, 1918 and her name appears on the line "widow."

By the time of the 1920 Census, Alice Bredwell is living with her brother Charles Kreschke, who runs a meat market. Both report their father was born in Austria.

In the 1930 Census, Alice still resides with her brother Charles in Canton. Her son Joseph moves in shortly afterward.

Alice Jane Bredwell died in Globe Arizona, May 12, 1941 at the age of 79 yrs, 8 month, 17 days. Her usual occupation was housewife. Her father Joseph Krischke was born in Silesia Austria. Her mother Mary E. Johnson was born in Lewis Co. KY. The informant is her son "Edgar" whom I take to be Marion E. Bredwell. He is also buried at the same BPOE Rest Cemetery, so I assume she was living with him at the time. Her Findagrave memorial is at this link.

Here is her obituary in the Miami Arizona paper.

SEVERANCE-STAEBLER, Lena

UPDATE - Lena has been claimed by a relative and  is going home!

Identification on photo: LENA SEVERANCE STABLER

Photo taken: White Studio, Ann Arbor MI, circa 1930-1935

Purchased: 2019 Jan at the Palm Beach County Fairgrounds Antique Show

This photo of Lena Severance-Stabler was taken probably between 1930 and 1935 in Ann Arbor Michigan.

Lena was born 29 Aug 1907, the daughter of Earl Severance (1882-1948) and Grace De Groot (1885-1956). She had an older brother Aaron (1905-1985).

She appears on the following Federal Census records:

1920 Census, Michigan, Oakland Co., Lyon.
SEVERANCE, Earl, head, 37, born in MI of MI parents, farmer in general farming
SEVERANCE, Grace E., wife, 34, born in MI of MI parents
SEVERANCE, Aaron, son, 15, born in MI of MI parents
SEVERANCE, Lena, daughter, 12, born in MI of MI parents

1930 Census, Michigan, Jackson Co., Grass Lake.
SEVERANCE, Earl, head, 47, farmer in general farming

SEVERANCE, Lena, daughter, 22, Typist at Printing Office
DeGROOT, Carrie, mother-in-law, 67, born in MI of MI parents,
POWER, Jane, grandmother, 89, born in MI of NY and NJ parents

Lena attended Ann Arbor High School, and I was able to find this photograph of her in the 1927 Year Book.

In August 1935, Lena married Donald G Staebler (1910-2017), son of Albert J. Staebler (1877-1951) and Ella L. Goodell (1881-1977). Donald attended Ypsilanti High School, graduating in 1929. He attended Michigan State Normal College (now Eastern Michigan University) graduating in 1934 with a BS in Industrial Arts, and a life Certificate to teach.

At the time of their marriage, Donald (age 25) was employed as a teacher in Ann Arbor, and Lena (age 27) was employed as a saleslady at S.S. Kresge Company.

Lena died 1991.

Lena's husband Donald lived to the ripe old age of 106. They are buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Dixboro, Michigan.

BURKE, Donald & KERRIGAN, Marjorie

JOHN McDONALD "Donald" BURKE III

Identification on photo: Donald III, grandson of Lucile Cristcarson, composer, nephew of June Roselle

Photo taken: unknown location or photographer, circa 1955

Purchased: Dec 2018 at Pasadena Antique Center, Pasadena California

UPDATE - These two photos have been claimed by a close relative and are going home!

This photo was acquired in Pasadena during a Christmas visit to California.

This charming child, labeled on the front of the snapshot only as "Donald III", was able to be identified based on the other information on the back of the photo. From that, we know that his grandmother was a composer named "Lucile Cristcarson", and his aunt was named "June Roselle".

I started first with the grandmother and was able to locate a brief newspaper obit on her. This is from the LA Times, 13-Oct-1978.

From this we learn that her name at one time was Burke and she was the mother of Miss June Roselle, Mrs. Betty Lou Dugan, Mrs. Marjorie Zittau, and Donald Burke.

Her daughter June Roselle was a stage actress and singer. Here is a newspaper insert on her from the Los Angeles Times 1952.

In searching for info on June Roselle, I came across a 2008 Plantation Florida obit on her brother Don Burke, whose real name was James McDonald Burke. He is survived by sisters Marjorie Zittau, Betty Dugan and June Roselle. Also two sons, one of which is Donald III. (I am not posting that here because many of the given survivors are obviously living.)

In researching more about Don Burke II, I also stumbled across the obit for his son "Donald III". He died at age 71 in Florida in December 2017, putting his birth year at 1946.

Incidentally, another photo found in the same booth was of a woman named MARJORIE KERRIGAN, who lived in La Jolla CA in 1935, when the photo was taken. I acquired that photo also and have since determined that this is Donald's aunt later known as Marjorie Zittau. She was born in 1919 and died in 2013. She lived most of her life in La Jolla and in later years served as vice-president of the Community Association of La Jolla.

HEAGY-HECK, Margaret

This old photograph was found at the Times Remembered Antique store in Ventura, California. I did not buy this, but if it is your ancestor, I can tell you where to locate it in the store.

The photo is of MARGARET HEAGY-HECK (8Nov1797 - 22Jan1871). Framed and behind glass, the booth owner is asking $79 so I did not buy it. But the back of the item contains a treasure-trove of genealogical information. So I snapped a photo on my cell phone of the front and the back. I was able to add some other names and dates during the research process.

MARGARET HEAGY-HECK is a daughter of George HEAGY and Hannah (possibly SHLETZ, or SLETZ). The family was from the area of Newville, PA. George Heagy is buried at White Church Cemetery in Gettysburg PA.

Margaret married Daniel HECK (3Jan1789-17May1849) and they had 9 children, two of which died in infancy. Among their offspring were:
Hannah (born 1817)
Maria (1822, m. Jacob KLINE)
Rebecka Ann (1827-1911, m. Henry SOUDER)
John A. (1831-1900, m. Sarah BEST)
James Henry (1833-1902, m. Jane Mary TRITT)
William Charles (1835-1893, m. Lucinda ROOF)

Whoever owned the photograph last was descended from James Henry HECK and Jane Mary TRITT, as further descendency through this couple is listed on the reverse of the photo.

James Henry and Jane Mary were the parents of:
Martha Belle "Mattie" HECK (1860-1944, m. Edward P. MUNN, 1855-1942)
James Oscar HECK (1861-1894)
Clyde T. HECK (1876-1949)

Martha's husband Edward was a son of John Calvin MUNN and Ruth Ellen CURTIS. Martha and Edward were the parents of:
Merle V. MUNN (m. Adolph BREITENWISCHER)
Ray Edward MUNN (1881-1974, m. Myrtle BROER)
Paul Heck MUNN (1885-1944, m. Maude GREEN), and they were the parents of:
--Edward Payson MUNN (1909-1975)
--Donald Clare MUNN
--David MUNN
--Marjorie MUNN
--Lillian MUNN

The notes on the back of the photo state that David married Anne King KRUGH (1920-1987), but this is incorrect. Donald Clare MUNN married Anne King KRUGH and had children Donald C. Jr. and Judith Ann.

Donald C. MUNN Jr. married a woman whose name starts with M (writing is very faint) and may be Melanie (?) and they had children Jennifer and Anne (?).

I found a later image of Margaret Heagy-Heck on Ancestry.com which had been posted to a couple of different family trees. She is much older in this image, but I am certain this is the same person. Especially noticeable is Margaret's left eye which is more open than the right eye. This is visible in both photos.

SHAFER, KEMP, TODD photo album

SHAFER, KEMP, TODD Album

UPDATE - this album has been claimed by a great-granddaughter of Aaron Shafer, and is going home.

This lovely little photo album was acquired from the South Florida Fairgrounds Antique Show, December 2018. It contains 37 photographs, 22 of which are identified, mostly of SHAFER, KEMP and TODD surnames. Most of the photos appear to have been taken between 1863-1895. Many are tin-type.

The album is roughly 5 x 6.5 x 2 inches, and was covered in a royal blue velveteen at one time, but has since been worn off by a century of caresses in the hands of loved ones.

I paid $100 to bring this album home so I could start researching it, which is well beyond my normal budget. But others who engage in this same line of genealogical service will understand precisely when I say that it was too precious to leave behind. This many related photos together in one spot is a rare find. If I had left it there, how do I know that the next person would not have bought it to cannibalize the photos for some God-awful craft project? …… OK - end of soap-box rant.

I think the photos in the album may be ordered by importance, or closeness, to whoever owned the book. I will present the photos here in the same order in which they appear in the album.

With this many clues all together, it was pretty easy to find the correct family on Ancestry.com. This first photo is a tin-type which shows George N. SHAFER (1819-1891) and his wife Mary Ann BROWN (1827-1902). George was born in Tennessee to parents John SHAFER and Anna Catherine RINKER.  Mary was born 27 July 1827 in Butler Co. OH to parents Jacob BROWN and Lydia MURPHY.

The 1880 Census > Indiana > Cass > Galveston
SHAFFER, George N., 62, head, Hotel keeper, born in TN of VA parents
SHAFFER, Mary A., 51, wife, keeping house, born in OH of VA & NJ parents
TODD, Eva, 23, daughter, asst housekeeper, born in IND
TODD, Morris C., 2, grandson, born in IND

They appear to have had 8 children. Through various sources, I have assembled this list of offspring:
  • John A Shafer (1846-1868) died age 22
  • Louisa A Shafer (1849-1928) age 81
  • Otterbein D Shafer(1851-1867) age 16
  • Corp. Edward A Shafer (1854-1878) age 24
  • Eva O Shafer (1857-1904) age 48
  • Aaron Castle Shafer (1864-1943) age 79
  • Elsie Shafer (1869-1869) age 0
  • Philander Shafer (1870-1870) age 0

Aaron Shafer married Fannie G. CLARK and had six children of his own:
  • Ralph Hoyt Shafer (1891-1899) age 8
  • Fred Waldo Shafer (1893-1899) age 6
  • Paul C Shafer (1895-1977) age 82
  • Mary Ruth Shafer (1897-1909) age 12
  • Keith M. Shafer (1899-1948) age 49
  • Dorthea Shafer (1905-1975) age 70

Eva married James H. TODD (July 1852 - ). They had 2 sons:
  • Maurice (1878-) married Sarah J Anderson in May 1903.
  • Roger S. Todd (abt 1881- )

On the 1900 Census, the family is living in Topeka KS. James works in the insurance industry. Eva is 43yo. Roger is 19 and works as a Railroad Clerk. Maurice is not listed in the household. There is a servant Sarah McKill.

These two young ladies are not identified, and not entirely sure if they are of the same person, or sisters. (They may be marked on the back, but the paper sleeves of the album are quite delicate, and I don't wish to cause any damage to it.) Might be earlier images of Eva.

Here is another image of Mary Brown Shafer, matriarch of the Shafer clan.

Here is another image of George and Mary's son Aaron. This is a tin-type.

This one is not identified. Appears to be two male siblings of near the same age. This is tin-type which appears to have been taken in the mid- to late-1860s.

Although unnamed, this looks a great deal like another son, Edward A Shafer, and I suspect this may be him, but could also be any of the other sons of George and Mary. There was a son Otterbein who died at age 16 in 1867. This photo was taken around that time and shows a boy in his mid-teens, so that is a possibility.

Although this album page is not identified, I know this person is Corporal Edward A Shafer, as I located the same image identified in an Ancestry.com family tree. According to US Army record, he enlisted May 8, 1876 in the 6th Infantry, at age 22, and was killed Dec 13, 1878 "by a shot maliciously fired by Pvt John Smith, same Company, at Fort Buford, Dakota Territory."

Another image of Mother Mary. This one shows the photo was taken in Kokomo, Indiana, and shows Mary at an older age than previous photos. Probably taken around 1890-1895.

This tin-type shows father George probably in his 60s.

This tin-type shows the two sons of Eva and James Todd; Maurice (born 1878) and Roger (born 24-Mar-1881).

Roger Seward TODD, the younger brother, lived to age 56, dying 3-Nov-1937 in Amarillo Tx, where he was residing at the Palo Duro Hotel and working as a traveling salesman. He was married to Caro Frances Slusher, and their home was in Kansas City MO.

This obit for Roger was found in the Kansas City Times, edition of Nov 5, 1937. He appears to have had no children of his own, as survivors mention brother Maurice (Hutchinson KS) and two step-children.

While these two small photos are identified as Maurice & Roger Todd, I believe they are both of the same person (Maurice). Clearly the young man in both photos is wearing the same clothing. If this is an example of two individuals dressed identically, then both fellows are at or near the same age. The photos were taken in the same studio, apparently in the same sitting. Maurice and Roger were separated by three years, so the identification cannot be accurate.

This photograph is identified as "Aaron Shafer, Louisa Angeline Shafer Kemp's brother." Aaron was born in 1864 and appears to be between 10-13 in this image.

This is Louisa Shafer Kemp, born in 1843, probably around age 20-23. This tin-type appears to have been taken around the time of the Civil War. Louisa Shafer married William KEMP (1843-1933).

William Kemp is the husband of Louisa A. Shafer. He was born 2 Aug 1843 in Ohio to parents Thomas Kemp and Elizabeth Eleanor Moore. He and Louisa had children Lillian Kemp-McClure (1869-1951) and Estelle Kemp (1871-1890).

William had many siblings:
  • Maurice Moore Kemp (1845-1932/35)
  • George Kemp (1847-1915)
  • David Jackson Kemp (1849-1918)
  • Sarah Hannah Kemp (1851-)
  • John L Kemp (1855-1936)
  • Finley Leonard Kemp (1859-1933)
  • Emily Jane Kemp (1861-1936)
  • Franklin Theodore Kemp (1864-1886)

This is William Kemp's brother George.

This photo is labeled Hannah Sarah Kemp Ware. She married George Elisha Waire (or Ware).

Two young boys ... at least I think these are two different people. Same studio and chair. I wonder why the young man is pointing his right index finger.

I think these may be siblings. They look a great deal alike. Also, I think the young woman is Emily Kemp-Work. I found this later photo (see below) of Emily Kemp-Work on Ancestry, taken circa 1895. There is a strong resemblence. She was born 1861. In this tin-type, the girl looks to be about 10 or 11, so if it is Emily this photo was taken in about 1871. It this IS Emily, then we can safely assume the boy, whose photo was likely taken the same day, is either her three-year younger brother Franklin, or her two-year older brother Finley.

I do not possess this photo

This is David Jackson Kemp, and his wife identified only as "Mrs. David Kemp" which tells me whoever labeled the photos was not close enough to her to be sure about her name. FYI- her name was Mary Ella Duncan.

This photo is of an unnamed Kemp of Kokomo, Indiana. It may be another image of David Kemp. There appears to have been a first name written, then erased.

Possibly another Kemp sibling - based on where this appears in the album.

Lillian Kemp McClure
The final photo in the album is of a little girl circa 1875 labeled Lillian Kemp McClure, who is a daughter of William Kemp and Louisa Shafer. She is a first cousin of Maurice and Roger Todd.

She grew up and married Charles A. McCLURE (1855-1905) and had at least one child; Leota McClure-Cook (1902-1990).

Leota McClure married Clayton M. COOK (1903-1991) and had five children:

I actually suspect Lillian may have been the person who assembled the photos in the album and labeled them, either that or a child of hers. The photos all seem to "intersect" where the Shafer and Kemp families come together; that is to say the connection of Louisa Shafer and William Kemp.

I designed a rough "family tree" grid that shows the relationship of the identified people in this album. You can click it for a larger image.
