BUCK, Harry

HARRY BUCK
Toronto Canada, circa 1904-1905

This photo was located in July 2015 at the Brandywine River Antique Mall in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

The photo was taken at the "Gagen & Fraser" photographic studio at 79 King Street West, Ontario. The subject wears graduation cap and gown and is clutching (presumably) a diploma in his right hand. He appears to be in his late teens. If we presume that he is around 18 years old, as most High School graduates are, and also presume the photo was taken circa 1904, then he must have been born 1886 or thereabouts.

Searching through clues in Ancestry.com, we do indeed find a person who appears to match the time and location of the clues.

Walter Harold John Buck
b. 6 Oct 1886, Elginburg, Ontario CAN
d. 20 Mar 1936, Hamilton, Ontario CAN

Son of Edwin Buck and Jerusha Jane Lake.

1891 Canadian Census, Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario
father Edwin appears as "Edward" and is said to be a farmer. He and Jerusha, at that time have two children; a daughter Frances (age 10) and a son "Hearld" (age 4).

1901 Canadian Census, Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario
BUCK, Edwin, head, 45 yo, blacksmith
BUCK, Jerusha, wife, 46
BUCK, Frances, daughter, 20
BUCK, Harold, son, 14, driver

In 1908, Harold married Elizabeth Brewster and the couple had a daughter Ona on 1910.

1911 Canadian Census, Brantford, Ontario
The Buck family now lives as lodgers with the William Henry family.
BUCK, Edwin, 56, works as laborer at a Plow Factory
BUCK, Jerusha, 56
BUCK, Herald, 24, laborer at a Plow Factory
BUCK, Elizabeth, 24
BUCK, Ona, 10 months

March of 1930 must have been especially difficult on Harold, as both of his parents died within 5 days of each other. On March 23 of that year, Edwin died of heart failure. Jerusha dies March 28.

Harold passed away March 20, 1936. His tombstone in Hamilton records him as "Herald W J Buck." His wife Elizabeth lived to 1974.

The reason I think this is the correct identification for the "Harry Buck" in the photo I found, is that there is another photograph online of Harry/Harold/Herald Buck, taken toward the end of his life, which bears a very strong resemblance to the 18 year old graduate.

I include a copy of that photo here for comparison. (I do not possess this photo at left - only the one shown at the top of this post.)

His daughter, Ona LaRae Buck, married Richard Alexander Kinsman and lived nearly a century, passing in 2009.
