WILLIAM RUSSELL LIGHTBODY

UPDATE - William Lightbody has been claimed by a cousin and is going home!

This is the very handsome William Russell LIGHTBODY. The photo was found in an antique shop in Glens Falls NY.

On the front of the matte there is a studio mark so faint it is almost unreadable. It may say "Edgar H Horton Co." Much more easily made out is the location "Providence R.I."  The back is labeled "William R. Lightbody".

Through some research, I was able to determine that this is William Russell Lightbody. Born in New Hampshire on May 12, 1882 to parents James G. LIGHTBODY and Alice FOLSOM.

The 1900 Census shows he was 18 and living at home in Manchester NH with his parents and sister Elizabeth "Bessie" who was 5 years younger.

He graduated from Brown University (Providence RI) in 1906 and worked as a physician.

At some point he was elected the City Physician for Manchester New Hampshire.

The 1930 Census shows he was living at the home of his widowed father in Manchester at that time.

His death certificate states that he died August 12, 1944 at the Veteran's Hospital in West Roxbury Massachusetts, indicating that he must have had a military career, presumably in World War I. His ashes are interred at Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester NH.

  1. Thank you for posting this Kathleen. Someone from my Lightbody Facebook group posted this link.

I am not related but I do have more information about William Russell Lightbody. William's father was James was the son of Robert Lightbody and Anne (Hannah) McCreedy. She was from Ireland. Robert was born in NY, the son of Irish parents James Lightbody and Mary Adams.

There were five other children, James Adam who married Marella Wade, John Michael, Hugh who married Sarah Wright, Mary who married Jonas Davis, William and a Nancy.

Robert and Nancy were born in New York State while the others were born in Ireland. Belfast and Killinchy areas. Their immigration at Fort Covington, NY in 1823

They settled in Westville, Franklyn Co. NY

Some of the descendants moved to Ohio, Indiana, Minnesota and New Hampshire, Tennessee.

I did have a name and an address of someone who is related but it is decades out of date and I no longer even know if this person is still living. If I find anything else I will pass it along.

  2. Thank you very much Amanda! I love that you were able to add so much more information on William. I hope someone at the Lightbody Facebook group will want to take him home. If not, I think the Historical Society at Manchester NH might be interested in the photo since he was such a well-known citizen of that town.

  3. Hello Kathleen,

This is the person who I believe may be related in some way to William. She may know of other relations. She would be in her 90's now. Beverly D. Anderson - 109 Westlook Circle, Oak Ridge, TN 37830. I was not able to find a phone number or email for her but I have seen as recent as 2012 there were internet postings with her name for other related families she researches. Hope this proves helpful.

  7. Hi Cat,
I currently live in James And Williams old house in Manchester, NH. I’ve been researching the original Family who built the house. If ever you want to part with a picture or no one in your family wants it, I would love to hang some original pictures of them up. I would love to learn more. Like Jame’s wife’s name and what she died of? Thanks! Bridget
