GROESBECK, Frank and Edna (Hardin County IA)

FRANK & EDNEY GROESBECK

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Frank & Edney Goosbeck"
PHOTO TAKEN: Watters Studio, Eldora IA, circa 1898
PURCHASED: 2017 Traditions Antique Mall, Wildwood FL

This was a toughie! Whoever wrote the names on the back was not familiar enough with the family to spell the surname correctly. What is given as "Goosbeck" actually turned out to be "Groesbeck".

The photo was taken in Eldora, Hardin County, Iowa. Once I accepted that the name could be misspelled, it became an easier task. I have located a Frank "Grossbeck" and his wife Nora Edna, on the 1900 Census for Union Iowa, about 10 miles south of Eldora (the county seat, and likely closest photographer). NOTE - Census taker has spelled the name wrong.

Frank is James Frank GROESBECK, son of James Groesbeck (1837-1916) and Susan Burr (1848-1922).

Edna was born Nora Edna UPDIKE, daughter of William Updike (1849-1906) and Sarah Sweet (1849-1915).

1900 Federal Census > IA > Hardin > Union
GROSSBECK, Frank, head, Apr 1879, 21, m. 1yr, born in IA of NY and PA parents, day laborer
GROSSBECK, Edna, wife, Jan 1879, 21, m. 1 yr, 1 of 1 child living, born in IA
GROSSBECK, Basil L., son, Mar 1899, 1, born in Iowa of Iowa parents

Frank's parents are enumerated next-door:
GROSSBECK, James, head, Oct 1836, 63, born in PA, liveryman
GROSSBECK, Susan, wife, Dec 1843, 56, born in PA of PA parents

Sept 1918, Frank registers for the WWI Draft, giving his full name as "James Frank Groesbeck", born April 22, 1879, occupation Drayman.

By the 1920 Census, the family has move 20 miles east to the township of Clay in Grundy County, Iowa.

1920 Federal Census > IA > Grundy > Clay
GROESBECK, Frank, head, 40, born in Iowa of IL parents, dray man
GROESBECK, Edna, wife, 40, born in IA of MI and NY parents
GROESBECK, Bastle, son, 20, born in IA, teamster
GROESBECK, Wanda, dau, 14, born in IA
GROESBECK, Claude, son, 11, born in IA
GROESBECK, Ella, dau, 9, born in IA
GROESBECK, Robert, son, 2, born in IA

James Frank Groesbeck died in 1955. This obituary gives more details about his life.

Edna died in 1959.

Their descendants:
1899 - Bastle Lloyd Groesbeck (d. 1939)
1906 - Wanda Lucille Groesbeck (d. 1985) m. Roland Briggs

EMERICK FAMILY (Paulding County OH)

JESSE E EMERICK FAMILY

UPDATE - This photo has been sent home to the grand-daughter of Clayton.

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Mrs. J E Emerick, R2, Latty, Paulding, OH"
PHOTO TAKEN: Unknown photographer, presumably Ohio, circa 1916-1917
PURCHASED: 2016 June, Athens KY Schoolhouse Antiques Show

What I thought was identification of the subjects on the back turned out to be a mailing address to the person the photo was sent to.  However, I am beginning to think the photo actually depicts the recipient and her immediate family, as genealogical clues appear to match so far.

Although no year is indicated, this appears to be circa 1916 to 1917 based on clothing.

This appears to be Jesse Edward EMERICK (1873-1949), son of Samuel H. Emerick and Mary Medaugh Hartzog. He was a farmer in Latty Township, Paulding County, Ohio.

His wife is Ellen Jane WRIGHT (1877-1950), daughter of Marcus E. Wright and Sarah Mills Lackey.

They had three handsome sons:
 1899 - Marcus Edward Emerick (d. 1965) m. Lavern E. Mellinger.
          1921 - Carlton L Emerick (d. 1983 in KY) m. Gathyl Downing
                  1949 - Barry Edward Emerick (d. 2004)

1925 - Bettyanne Emerick (Dau of Gail Greene) m. Emery Diamond Jr
____ - son of Ethel Smith

Although the Census records do not give a detailed address, the WWI Draft Registration for Jesse gives his address as Route 2, Latty, Paulding County, OH. This is the same address given on the back of the photo.

EGENBERGER and WOLF (Manhattan, NY)

EUNICE EGENBERGER and ETHEL WOLF

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Taken Sept 1892, Eunice Egenberger, 1 yr, Ethel Dot Wolf, 10 yrs, in front of 128 E. 31st St, NYC"
PHOTO TAKEN: unknown photographer, Sept 1892
PURCHASED: 2020 January, Traditions Antique Mall, Wildwood FL

This photograph was taken in Manhattan, in front of 128 E. 31st Street. This address was helpful in determining the identity of the child in the stroller.

The New York Index to Birth Records shows Eunice Egenberger born 15 Sep 1891 to parents Edward Egenberger and Annetta Egenberger (maiden name WOLF), who resided at 131 E. 31st Street in New York City. That address is directly across the street from where the photograph was taken.

By the time of the 1900 Census, two more children have been added and the family had moved to the Bronx.

1900 Federal Census > NY > NY > Bronx
EGENBERGER, Edward, head, Sep 1865, 34, born in NY of German parents, jeweller
EGENBERGER, Anneta, wife, Aug 1866, 33, born in NY of German parents
EGENBERGER, Eunice, dau, Sep 1891, 8, born in NY, at school
EGENBERGER, Julina, dau, Oct 1892, 7, born in NY, at school
EGENBERGER, Edward Jr., son, Sep 1894, 5, born in NY, at school

At the age of 18, Eunice was married to Harry Myron Taylor, a chauffeur by trade, and both bride and groom were living at that time in New Rochelle. Wedding was Dec 1, 1909. Groom Harry is a son of a jeweller George Taylor and his wife Arloa Eick. Sister Juliana Egenberger was one of the witnesses at Eunice's wedding. Juliana married Ross Ressler in Oct 1911.

Harry died Oct 1966 in Wall Township, NJ. His obit in the Asbury Park Press states he was a widower, his wife being Meda Brown-Taylor. No mention of Eunice. He has two surviving children; Mrs. Richard Dodd (of Wall Township) and George H. Taylor (Orlando FL). Are these children of Eunice or Meda? By the time of the 1920 Census he is married to Meda. Therefore Eunice either died or divorced prior to 1920.

Because Eunice's mother was born a Wolf, and the 10-year-old Ethel in the photo has a surname of Wolf, one can presume that Ethel is either a younger sister of Annetta Wolf, or a niece, more specifically - a daughter of her brother (if such existed).

I am having no luck finding her in Census records. If she was 10 years on in 1892, she was born in 1882 +/- and therefore no born yet for the 1880 Census. The 1890 Federal Census is missing (destroyed in fire) and a bane to genealogists everywhere. By the 1900 Census, she would have been 18 or 19 and possibly married, living under a new surname. Or she could be deceased or moved away.

1920 Federal Census > NJ > Camden > Gloucester

On the 1940 Census, Isabelle at age 34 is living alone in Upper Darby Pennsylvania and employed as a librarian. She married late in life (at age 71 to H. Robert Lee) and had no children.

She died 28 Sep 2007, in Beach Haven NJ, at age 101. This very thorough obituary appeared in the Asbury Park Press, 03 Oct 2007. It contains so much information on Isabelle that there is no need to do much of the standard research on her.

ESTABROOKS, Orson and Temperence (Malone NY)

ORSON & TEMPERENCE ESTABROOKS

UPDATE - this photo has been claimed by the couple's great-great-grandson, and is going home!

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Uncle Orson & Aunt Tempy Estabrooks"
PHOTO TAKEN: Chas. J. Ferris Studio, Malone NY, circa 1888-90
PURCHASED: 2019 August Brandywine River Antique Mall, Chadds Ford PA

The time period of 1888-1890 seems appropriate for this image based upon the fashions of the form-fitting short-waisted dress top over the draped-front skirt. The man's jacket is typical of the 1880s, with small lapels and only the top button fastened. This style was seen as early as 1879, more popular during the 1880s, and not seen much at all after about 1891.

This is Orson E. Estabrooks (1828-1898, son of Nathaniel and Anna Estabrooks) of Franklin County, NY, and his wife Temperence Pond (1832-1910).

Temperence is a daughter of Simeon Pond (a son of Revolutionary War soldier Paul Pond) & Susannah Edgerly.

They had a son, Harvey E. Estabrooks (1853-1928).

1870 Federal Census > NY > Franklin > Burke
ESTABROOKS, Orson, 42, Farmer, born in NY
ESTABROOKS, Temperence, 38, keeping house
ESTABROOKS, Harvey, 17, works on farm

Harvey Estabrooks married Mary Lawrence, and had only one child:
 - Ella May Estabrooks (1892-1981).

Ella May Estabrooks was married to Lawrence Friend on March 26, 1913. They had four children:
 - Evelyn F. Friend, b. 1916, d. 2002 (Teacher at public school) m. Everal Smith (Johnson City NY)
 - Eva R. Friend, b 1918, d. 1999, m. Robert Ames (Ithaca NY)
 - Earl Maynard Friend, 1922, m. Helen G. Moore (Burke NY)
 - Jean M. Friend, 1924, m. Carlton Van Ornum (Rome NY)

I can track descendancies further, but will not include that information here as those people are undoubtedly living and my policy is to protect the privacy of living people as much as possible.

DIEFFENBACH. Kittie (Sullivan County, PA)

KITTIE DIEFFENBACH

IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Kittie Diffenbach 1 year"
PHOTO TAKEN: unknown location and photographer, circa 1905-1906
PURCHASED: 2017 Aug Madison-Bouckville (NY) Antiques Week

The handwriting on the back appears to say "Diffenback" or "Diffenbach" but I believe the correct spelling is DIEFFENBACH considering the area in which these people lived. The surname in Lancaster County PA is generally spelled DIFFENBACH, but those from Sullivan County PA use DIEFFENBACH. The headstone above is from Findagrave.com and shows the unusual first name of father Sylvellin Dieffenbach.

I acquired this photo with another marked "Diffenbach" which bears a photographer's stamp giving a location of Dushore Pennsylvania, which is in Sullivan county, and gives a starting location for the research.

"Kittie" is often a nickname for Kate, Catherine, Kathleen, etc.

I immediately found a Catherine Dieffenbach (born abt 1906 to parents Sylvellin A. Dieffenbach and Eldora Margaret Brown) on the 1910 Federal Census for Sullivan County Pennsylvania, in a township called Cherry (abt 6 miles south of Dushore):

1910 Federal Census > PA > Sullivan > Cherry
DIEFFENBACH, Sylvellin A., head, 46, married for 24 yrs, born in PA of PA parents, coal miner
DIEFFENBACH, Dora M., wife, 44, married 24 years, 5 of 6 children living, born in PA of PA parents
DIEFFENBACH, Lewis M., son, 23, born in PA, works at coal mine
DIEFFENBACH, Daniel H., son, 18, born in PA, works at coal mine
DIEFFENBACH, Ellie L., dau, 16, born in PA
DIEFFENBACH, Catherine D., dau, 4, born in PA

The missing children from this Census are Winnie Mae Dieffenbach-Sailor, who was born in 1889 (making her abt 21 at the time, and likely already married and out of this household). The other is Madeline Laura Dieffenbach (1898-1899) which accounts for the "6 children, 5 living" note on Dora's line in the 1910 Census.

Kathryn D. Dieffenbach-Bergan-Vogel (born 14 Aug 1905, Sullivan County PA - died 25 May 1972 in Rochester NY) buried in Irondequoit Cemetery, Monroe County NY. She was married twice, 1) Cyril Joseph Bergan (died 1942), 2) Ellery G. Vogel.  Per her 1972 obit, her survivors included her brother Daniel of Sayre PA, and her children:
 - Donald Bergan
 - Robert Bergan
 - Gloria Bergan Crocetti (1929-1978) m. Tee Crocetti
 - Judy Bergan Plunkett, wife of David Plunkett
 - Ellen Bergan, wife of 1) Paul Bonnet (California), 2) Mooney

DUERR, Effie (St Charles IL)

EFFIE DUERR
IDENTIFICATION ON PHOTO: "Effie Duerr"
PHOTO TAKEN: Eisenberg Studio, St Charles IL, circa 1915-1917
PURCHASED: 2016 Hollywood Antiques, Eugene OR

The back also bears the name "Sadie" who is, I believe, the recipient of the photo, and might explain how the photo travelled from Illinois to Oregon.

Born Anna Julia Pearl Dykeman on 28 July 1885 in Kane County Illinois, she always went by "Effie". She appears to have lived her entre life in St. Charles Illinois.

Her parents were Peter Dykeman (1855-1916) & Anna Sofia Jonsson (1846-1922). Mother Anna had lots of family who settle in the area of Spokane Washington.

1900 Federal Census > Illinois > Kane > St Charles
DYKEMAN, Peter, head, Sep 1855, 44, born in IL of German parents, nightwatchman
DYKEMAN, Anna, wife, Jun 1846, 54, 3 of 3 children living, born in Sweden
DYKEMAN, Elmer, son, Oct 1878, 21, born in IL, works at chain factory
DYKEMAN, Effie, dau, Jul 1885, 14, born in IL, at school

(The factory Elmer worked at was likely Crown Mfg, which made cycle chains.)

1910 Federal Census > Illinois > Kane > St Charles
DYKEMAN, Peter, head, 53, born in IL, policeman for city
DYKEMAN, Annie, wife, 64, 3 of 4 children living, born in Sweden
DYKEMAN, Effie, daughter, 22 s, born in IL, laborer in factory

On 15 July 1915, Effie married Frank Henry Duerr (1889-1955), son of Jacob Duerr & Elizabeth Blacksmith, on July 13th, 1915, Kane Co., IL. The couple apparently had no children of their own, but adopted Lucille Nellie Golladay (b. 1916, dau of James Edward Golladay and Ella Irene Myers.
Her mother Ella died 16 days after Lucille was born. She later became Mrs. Ralph Ory).

1920 Federal Census > Illinois > Kane > St Charles
DYKEMAN, Anna, head, 73 wd, born in Sweden
DUERR, Frank, son-in-law, 30, born in IL of German parents, mechanic at own garage
DUERR, Effie, dau, 33, born in IL, no occupation

Effie & Frank divorced sometime in the 1920s. Frank remarried to Elizabeth “Betty” Kitzendorf, with whom he had a daughter, Phyllis Ann Duerr, in 1929.

Effie had a brother Elmer Dykeman (1878 - 14 Dec 1960), who married Nellie Burns in 1904, and had a son Leo Dykeman (Dec 3 1905 - Jan 1976) who served in WWII as a staff sargent in the Army.

Effie Duerr's older sister Harriet Adele Dykeman married 1) Mark E. Davis, and 2) William Sanchez. She died in Palo Alto CA. With her first husband she had a son:
  - Mark C. Davis (born 1901 in Spokane Washington, d. 1984 in Moorpark Calif.) m. Florence Davies
   --- son (_)
--- daughter Rodlyn Isabel Davis (1932-2003, m. Robert Stork).
