And this insert (at left) was in The Norwich Sun April 6, 1909.

(You may click the image for a larger version.)

1910 Census > NY > Chenango > Columbus > Talett Road
POPE, D. Lavell, head, 45, born in NY of NY parents, Farmer
POPE, Caroline, wife, 43, born in NY of English parents
POPE, Edith, daughter, 18, born in NY
POPE, Sidney, son, 15, born in NY

On 31 Dec 1914, Edith Glenne Pope (age 22) married Royce Lovane Beers (age 26, mechanical engineer with Detroit Stoker Co.). Bride's parents are D.L. Pope and Caroline Lee Worthy (or perhaps Leworthy). Groom's parents are William H. Beers and Edna C. Mason.

They had four children:
  • Leland Pope Beers (1915-1998) had a son and a daughter.
  • Barbara A. Beers (1918-1997) married but not sure if she had children.
  • Robert Edwin Beers (1921-1985) married Lareine May Armspach.
  • Walter Lavelle Beers (1928-1995) married Eugenia Billeter and had 2 daughters.

1940 City Directory for Birmingham Michigan, Edith Beers is mentioned twice; once as the wife of Royce L. Beers, and also in an entry of her own in which she is described as the "Pres Am Assn of University Women".

Edith died 3 April 1940 in Birmingham Michigan, of apoplexy (which I believe is now simple called stroke).

MOFFIT, Pearl

PEARL MOFFIT
New Berlin, NY, Class of 1909

Identification on photo: PEARL MOFFIT
Photo taken: Talbot Studio, New Berlin, NY 1909
Purchased: Aug 2018 Madison-Bouckville NY Antiques Week

I am having a difficult time with this person's research. Other than the following mention in a local newspaper, I am not coming up with any other evidence of her existence.

This insert was found in the March 19, 1908 issue of The Norwich Sun newspaper. It shows the names of several students in New Berlin preparing for a scholarly contest, and mentions Pearl Moffit and Edith Pope (whose photo is also among those found in this group).

It has been brought to my attention by one of my readers that a woman named Pearl Moffit appears on the 1920 Census for Springfield MO, Ward 2. On that Census she is 28 years old (which would be correct for this person), is not employed, and is boarding at a hotel with other hotel and railroad employees. She is said to have been born in Missouri, like everyone else boarding here, and that her parents were born in New York.

This is intriguing, but I am not convinced this is the right Pearl Moffit. A search through Newspapers.com finds mention of a Moffit family living in Springfield MO in 1907. While it is entirely possible this family moved to New Berlin NY where Pearl graduated in 1909, it is not entirely likely.

I will keep working on this one.

Florence Arlina Gage, (born 25 June 1891 in Gilbertsville NY) was the daughter of Charles Burdette Gage and Edith Aikins. She had a brother Frank Gage (who married Mertie Curtis).

In 1921 they had a daughter Gertrude Elaine Morrell (1921-2015) who married Theodore Walter Box (1915-2003). Gertrude had eight children, so I am confident I can find a living decendant of Flossie to receive her photo.

Flossie died 3 July 1950 and is buried at the Riverside Cemetery in South New Berlin, Chenango County, NY. Her husband survived her by 20 years.

This photo (at left) of Florence at age 31 was found on Ancestry.com and I include it here for comparison.

While in High School in New Berlin, Loren was active in the Literary Society. This insert reporting the results of a particular debate was found in the Chenango Telegraph, 26 Dec 1905.

In the year before he graduated High School, Loren's mother died. His father Aden remarried in 1921 to Anna's younger sister Minnie.

At age 26, on his WWI registration card, his occupation is "verification clerk" at the NY telephone company.

Loren died 20 Nov 1949 at age 59. This obit was found in the 22 Nov 1949 edition of The Norwich Sun, Norwich NY.

UPDATE - also found at the same booth was this photograph (below) of people I believe are close relations to Loren ANGELL.

The photo was taken circa 1911 at the same photographic studio (Talbot) in New Berlin, NY, and is identified as "Belle and Ray ANGELL, and Robert".

I have identified Belle as Lena Belle Matteson, whom I believe to be a relation of Loren's mother Anna Matterson/Matteson.

Robert Malcolm ANGELL (1898-1962), son of Mark Ray ANGELL (1874-1948) and Lena Belle MATTESON (1878-1951).

SHAWLER, Myra

MYRA SHAWLER
New Berlin NY, Class of 1909

Identification on photo: MYRA SHAWLER
Photo taken: Talbot Studio, New Berlin, NY 1909
Purchased: Aug 2018 Madison-Bouckville NY Antiques Week

Myra Lucy Shawler was born 20 Nov 1889 to parents Floyd Shawler (1852-1923, a farmer) and Bertha G. Whitney (1860-1949). She was the eldest of three siblings, the others being Hoyt N. Shawler (1892-1983) and Evelyn M. Shawler (1894-1987).

On the 1910 Census, the year after this photo was taken, she is living at home and works as an English Teacher at the District School.

In Dec of 1912, she married Walter Hathaway Clark, and appears to have had no children, as there is no mention of them on the subsequent Census rolls. State Census records of 1915 and 1925 also show no children in the household.

1920 Census > NY > Chenango > Columbus > Shawler Brook Rd
CLARK, Walter H., head, 33, born in NY of NY and Mass. parents, dairy farmer

No real changes on the 1940 Census, except for Walter and Myra being a decade older.

Myra died July 1984 (age 94) in New Berlin, NY. She is buried in the Columbus Corners Cemetery, and interestingly she had also been the treasurer for the Columbus Corners Cemetery Association.

New Berlin NY Class of 1909

One of my most recent acquisitions was this group of 10 Senior photos, from New Berlin, New York, each of which is stamped "Class of 1909" in the upper left corner. In the lower left is the mark "Talbot, New Berlin, NY."

The students are identified as:

Myra SHAWLER
Ethel SPRAGUE
Frances PECK
Edna MARTIN
Jessie HOLMES
Loren ANGELL
Flossie GAGE
Marjorie BANKS
Pearl MAFFIT or MOFFIT
Edith POPE

There were also four other photos of adults, in identical photo mats from the same photographic studio, of which I am certain two were teachers of the 1909 students. These are identified as Miss Mary CAMPBELL and Miss Clara TODD.

The remaining two adults are marked as an aunt and uncle, perhaps of one of the students in the photos. These are labeled Uncle Fred MATTESON and Aunt Chat MATTESON whom I have already determined is Charity MATTESON.

I think it best to tackle this group of related photos one at a time, in separate posts, as that will best aid whomever is looking for their specific ancestor/relative.

I also found (online) this image of an old postcard showing the High School, New Berlin, New York, 1909.  I do not possess this postcard, and only show it here for additional information and interest.

Look for forthcoming posts on the individual students and teachers.

UPDATE - This photo has been claimed by one of Beverly's children, and is being sent home!

Identification on photo: Stuart & Beverly Chapin
Photo taken: Dec 12, 1936, unknown location
Purchased: Aug 2018 at the Madison-Bouckville NY Antiques Week

This trifold Christmas Card featuring a photo of young siblings was acquired at the Madison-Bouckville Antiques Week last month in upstate New York. You can see that the parents are identified as Mr & Mrs Lester J. Chapin, and the children are Stuart and Beverly.

1930 Census > NY > Chenango > New Berlin > 106 Green Street
CHAPIN, Lester J, head, 22, born in NY of NY parents, laborer at feed store
CHAPIN, Grace L, wife, 19, born in NY of NY parents, works as servant

1940 Census > Florida > Dade County > River Park Trailer Camp
CHAPIN, Lester, head, 33, Garage mechanic
CHAPIN, Grace, wife, 29
CHAPIN, Stewart, son, 6, born in NY
CHAPIN, Beverly, daughter, 5, born in NY

Lester J Chapin, born in 1908 and died in 1991, is buried at Stockbridge Cemetery in Munnsville, Madison County, NY. According to Findagrave.com, he is the son of Jesse and Edna Chapin of Pittsfield NY, and in 1928 married Grace Beatty (1911-1997, daughter of George Beatty and Roxy Quick).

Lester's obituary was located in the Syracuse Post-Standard issue of 26 Sept 1991, and is shown at left (click for larger version.).

His parents Jesse E. Chapin (1884-1938) and Edna M. Hand Chapin (1888-1962) are buried at the Fairview Cemetery in New Berlin NY (about 4 miles west of Pittsfield) along with an infant daughter Ethel M. (1910-1910).

Beverly June Chapin (born 11 Mar 1935) and her husband Charles Edward Shetler (b. 1933) lived in Madison NY (where this photograph/card was acquired) and have a headstone at the Stockbridge Cemetery, but there are no death dates for either. Charles died in 2013, at which point Beverly was still living.

Stuart G. Chapin is also buried at Stockbridge Cemetery in Munnsville. He died at age 74 on 26 Dec 2007.  His headstone memorializes not only himself (1933-2007), but also his wife Dorothy Rampe (1935-1986, age 49) and a son Christopher (1967-1975, age 8).

This more recent image of Stuart is taken from the online obituary for him, which can be read in its entirety at this link.

UPDATE - A few days after posting the above Stuart & Beverly Chapin post, and mailing the photo home to Beverly's daughter, I was looking through the other photos acquired at the 2018 Madison-Bouckville show.  I found one that had slipped into another photo cover, and I was not aware I had it.  Remarkably, the "new" photo was of Lester and Grace CHAPIN. That is to say - the parents of Stuart and Beverly.

The research on them is already posted above.

This one will be joining the photo of their children, in the loving care of their family.

CLARK, Halsey Steele

UPDATE - Halsey Steele Clark has been claimed and is going home!

Identification on photo: HALSEY STEELE CLARK
Photo taken: J.T. Colyers studio, Waterbury CT, circa 1900
Purchased: Aug 2018 at the Madison-Bouckville (NY) Antiques Week

In this photo, Halsey Steele Clark appears to be in his early to mid 50's. The look of the photo, and fashion worn, place it around 1900-1910. So the subject was born around 1850-1860.

A quick search on Ancestry.com finds a "Halsey Steel Clark" born on New Year's Day 1855, in Prospect Connecticut, to parents Merritt Clark (1818-1894) and Mary Augusta Skilton (1822-1901). He had siblings Marion Adela (1850-1904), Kate Colette (1853-1875), and Lavergne Grant (1862-1945).

CLARK, Marion A., 30, daughter, born in CT
CLARK, Halsey S., 25, son, laborer, born in CT
CLARK, Lavergne, 17, son, laborer, born in CT

On 25 May 1881, Halsey is married to Fannie Moulton Phipps (1852-1937) a daughter of William and Mary Phipps of Newton, Mass. The marriage Certificate states the bride was born in Paxton, Mass. This union produced a son, Clifford Phipps Clark (1883-1969).

1900 Census > CT > New Haven > Prospect

There was also a daughter of this couple, Mary (1902-1908) who died of Scarlet Fever at age 6.

Father, William H Barber (1867-1902) was the son of Hiram Barber (1833-1886) and Mary Clark (1835-1912). He is buried with his parents in the Greenwood Cemetery in New Berlin NY.

After the death of her husband, Ella Stanton-Barber remarried Herbert Wightman, (who worked for the Railroad Company) and relocated to Athens, Pennsylvania, which is just over the NY state line and southwest of Binghamton NY.
